Why Is It So Hard to Get Rid of Lice?

Now that you know what you're looking for I want to talk briefly about your biggest worry (that your child actually has lice) and the question I get asked by parents around the world that have been battling lice….

picture of lice bug under a magnifying glass

Parents around the world are all asking me the same question…. "Why is it so much harder to get rid of lice now?"

Lice have become immune to everything that used to work in the past. Perhaps you remember your mom using a typical lice treatment or mayonnaise and that doing the trick. The new strain of head lice is no longer killed by those treatments, that’s why lice today are termed by people, “super lice,” because they are immune to those treatments.

I’ve cured thousands of people of lice in my lice center and let me tell you, I don't do it with over-the-counter lice treatments.

magnifying glass looking at lice eggs and nits in brown hair

Most people struggle with lice because they focus all of their attention on killing lice bugs and not enough attention on GETTING RID OF LICE!

If you want to get rid of lice you have to address all 3 of the problems of lice:

  1. Lice Bugs
  2. Lice Eggs
  3. Getting Lice Back

The best way to get rid of lice is to tackle all 3 of these problems at the same time, which is what I teach in my step-by-step video system.

So, if you discover your child HAS lice, don't panic. Just head over to the video system. Follow along with the videos and you'll be done with lice by the end of the day.

DIY vs. Lice Prevention Products

mother spraying DIY Lice Prevention spray in daughters hair

If you are not a DIYer, there are many lice prevention sprays and shampoos made from essential oils that are already on the market and have been tested for both safety for use on children and effectiveness against lice.

Let me be clear... I do not recommend buying just any lice prevention product, they are NOT created equally. Just because something advertises that it prevents lice doesn’t mean it is effective. I have reviewed every prevention product out there, and these are the ones I recommend because they are packed with the best lice repelling essential oils.

My Top Three Picks:

These are my top 3 favorite store-bought lice prevention products.

  1. Lice Logic (I prefer Rosemary-Mint)
  2. Ladibugs Lice Prevention Mint Spray
  3. Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel

I have full reviews of lice prevention products in my articles Best Lice Prevention Shampoos and Best Lice Prevention Sprays. If you’re looking to buy an already-made and proven lice-prevention product, then head to those articles.

Prevent Head Lice AND Have Amazing Hair!

Head lice are like sharks…

Lice have a keen sense of smell, and they are attracted to human blood. Just like sharks, they can smell when your blood is near, and your head is within reach.

When lice smell a new yummy head, they instinctively want to go there. And when their instincts kick in, they don’t just meander over, they run, and they run fast, which is how lice spread.

But, the good news is...

You can use lice’s keen sense of smell against them. Your secret weapon is making your child’s hair smell nasty to head lice.

Head lice love the scent of humans, but several essential oils smell horrible to lice. If you have these fragrances in your hair, lice will run the opposite way.

The remarkable thing is that these essential oils that are so nasty to lice smell amazing to humans. Essential oils like this are called lice repellents or lice deterrents.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. People have used essential oils for their healing and bug repelling properties for centuries, including repelling head lice.

19 Essential Oils that Repel Lice

Below is a list of the essential oils that have shown to be effective against head lice in scientific studies. For a full rundown on these essential oils and the studies, check out my article 19 Lice Prevention Essential Oils Prevent to Repel Lice.

Essential Oils for Lice Prevention

BONUS TIP- Neem oil

Neem oil isn’t actually an essential oil; it’s a vegetable oil from Asia, but since it is an excellent lice-repellent, I’ve added it to the top of the list. Neem oil has proved highly effective against lice.

The major downside of neem oil is that it smells awful.

I recommend adding neem oil as a lice-repellent in small doses. Adding a teaspoon of neem oil to an 8 oz lice-repellent spray with lots of other scents will add a lot of lice protection, and the unpleasant scent will be covered up by the other fragrances.

Scent: Unpleasant, garlic/nutty

Studies: A 2012 study showed Neem oil and Eucalyptus oil together was far more effective against lice than pesticide products.

Are Essential Oils Safe?

Just because essential oils are natural and made from plants does not make them safe to use on children in large doses. Misusing essential oils can cause burns, skin irritation, respiratory problems, and poisoning.

Some essential oils on this list, like cinnamon and peppermint, can cause skin irritation, and others like Eucalyptus oil can cause respiratory or CNS problems in young children.

I have attempted to indicate which oils you should not use on young children, but ultimately when you use essential oil blends, you use them at your own risk. Every person reacts differently to essential oils, and children are even more susceptible to reactions.

Single Essential Oils vs. Blending Oils

You can use any individual lice prevention essential oil as a lice deterrent, but the BEST lice prevention comes from blending multiple lice prevention essential oils together.

Many more to come, including house spray and detangler tutorials, but first, let me answer your questions...

What’s neem oil, carrier oil, and fractionated coconut oil?

bottle of carrier oil

Neem oil:

Neem is a vegetable oil that has serious lice fighting properties. Adding one tsp of neem oil to any blend will pack a lot of punch against lice. It outperforms most lice prevention essential oils.

The trouble with neem oil is that it has an awful garlic/nutty smell. You can mask the scent by combining it with essential oils, but be sure you put no more than 1 tsp or else you’ll smell like garlic bread.

Carrier oils:

To decrease irritation to the skin and scalp, I recommend using a carrier oil with any mixture you plan to put in a spray. Carrier oils that are great for hair are fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil. In a pinch, you can use olive oil.

Fractionated Coconut Oil:

There was one study that showed that coconut oil has some lice-preventing qualities. Regular coconut oil is not ideal for putting in prevention products because it turns solid at room temperature. If you put it in your lice spray, you’ll need to warm it up every time you use it so that the oil will melt...no thanks. Fractionated coconut oil has the same lice fighting properties as regular coconut oil, but stays liquid, even in cold temperatures.

Tea Tree feels great in shampoo, but using Tea Tree oil alone as lice prevention is a mistake. I see hundreds of people in my salon who have been using Tea Tree in their shampoo and yet still get head lice.

Tea Tree alone is better than not using any lice deterring scents, but it is not adequate to prevent lice for most people. To prevent head lice you are better off using a variety of essential oils, including Tea Tree proven to ward off head lice.
